Have to add:
Matt Bellamy (Muse) - as has been mentioned, he has got a huge ego etc. but he is very competant, and most people I know can tell when a Muse song is on the radio.
Nick McCabe (The Verve) - they are no longer together and all that, but he definitely had a unique style. overall he is still my favourite guitarist - that isn't to say I think he is THE BEST, of course - Page, Hendrix, etc.
Nick Drake (for acoustic/finger picking playing) - Santana is an amazing classical player, Jimmy Page was great on the acoustic too, and John Martyn, etc... but Nick Drake had the most unique acoustic sound in my opinion

Gotta put in my vote :
Mark Knoppfler
Joe Satriani (Kirk Hammett has actually had lessons from joe)
Tom Morello - for uniqueness he gets the vote, but hes definately not one of the best guitarists. He does some cool stuff with delay and his beloved digitech whammy. Digitechs profits must have trippled when RATM became popular
Angus Young - To have made so many well-known hits and riffs over 20 odd albums, theres definate talent. Each song, riff and rythym is unique even though he doesnt even use any effects - Good Ol' SG straight into his marshall amp using the amps distortion. Absolute champion
