What kind of file is it?

.exe - just find it and double click it.
.zip - needs to be unzipped using winrar, winzip, or one of the bazillion freeware zip utils. Usually contains a .exe which you run after unzipping it.
.iso - CD image. You need to get hold of 'Nero' and burn the ISO to a CD. you then install the game from the CD. probably the most common type now.
    .rar - see .zip

First scan the file with a antivirus if you have one.

    .vp - freespace archive,
    .mve - interplay video archive
    .dll - dynamic link library

i dont recognise pxo, but i think you want to try running wunpack (im assuming its a program, since you havn't given the .*** extension). I.E, extract all files to a new folder, then run wunpack.

    i think.

How big was the downloaded zip file?
    Did you follow sharedholder's advice:
First scan the file with a antivirus if you have one
