Try changing the transfer mode settings to PIO (programmed input/output).
In Windows XP, you do not find the settings in the properties dialog box for the device. The following Microsoft Knowledge Base article describes the steps for changing the settings.

DWK - some older machines have problems using the DMA access mode, which is why there is the option. An O/S needs to cater to all target machines, that includes the museum peices that many offices still use.
