Why Do People Put Underscores In Filenames ?

so if you have a url file that is a movie it needs undescores..if it is just a standard non-url mpeg avi etc..the it doesn't..right?


not asking why some people do it for the good old days..just asking why it would need to be done now....

LOL, Nexus UK. Calm down and have a beer or hire a prostitute but keep it calm and civil, for Christ sakes. BTW, FAT has nothing to do with "power to play." You can format a Pentium 100MHz with FAT32 or NTFS and it's still too slow to play MPEG-4. But you can use it to rip and convert (provided you follow the correct naming convention if you're using FAT16) but it could take days to complete its task. Peace

You are absolutely correct. We're talking about movies that are being shared on Kazaa, eMule, or Bittorrent. Because they are not part of a URL, there is no reason to use underscores instead of spaces. The only thing to remember is if you create a torrent, then it will be posted on a website as a URL so it should not have spaces because it might not work in a non-IE browser.

I can't believe this turned into such a big argument.

how about this-- movie distro groups not only distribute the movie files, but often they release nfo, readme, and subtitle files to go along with those. okay, you're most likely not going to see a 700mb file hosted on an HTTP server (although you might find 'em on FTP servers that are not set up to use spaces in file names).

but you WILL find the nfo/readme/sub files distributed separately through HTTP servers-- they prolly omit spaces for the sake of consistency, so those files will hopefully retain the same name as the movie files as they spread through the internet by whatever means (including websites).

let me say MY reason in other words:

i am too lazy to change filenames depending on their usage

and if you ever perorm a search or need to sort things in a database, then usage of spaces can create problems.
