We backup our database every x days to make sure that we have a working backup for the case that something happens (database crash etc)

This step takes around 2 - 3 minutes (800 MB backup). To make sure that the backup is not corrupt we disable board access.

If you backup while people browse or post it will backup a corrupt database which means that it cannot be restored.

7th, have you considered a detachable software raid system?

Effectively, what this means is that you create a mirror of the live system. This takes a few minutes to generate, but is updated at the same time so by the time it has finished they are identical (and both being updated).

You then take a checkpoint and detach the mirror. If this is scripted, is takes less than a second during which time the system is unavailable. Now you can make a backup of the mirror, which is not corrupt.

Of course, depending on the underlying system you can get this sort of software for nothing or it can cost you a small fortune.
