Help! How Do You Telnet?

I have the xbox and the pc connected by a crossover cable and I have tried various programs to attempt a telnet. All it says is to connect to telnet 192.168.0.3
and log in as root, password xbox, and type xbox_tool -a and write down the hard disk key. Is this important?
