Depending on your graphics card (which I can't see mentioned), the difference in performance between 4x AGP and 8x AGP will be very small,
This is the graphics card:

You've got nothing to worry about. The difference between AGP 4x and 8x on that card will be very small.
On a given day or given circumstance, you think you have a limit.
And you then go for this limit and you touch this limit and you think "Ok, this is the limit".
As soon as you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further.
With your mind power, your determination, your instinct and the experience as well, you can fly very high.

I wouldn't say it's finished because none of you know the significance of 1.5v AGP slots.

AGP 4x and 8x are 1.5v, whereas AGP 2x is 3.3v.
If you have a 2x AGP card and put it into a 4x-/8x-only slot, you could fuck the board circuitry.

Aren't you glad I'm around, eh?

actually agp8x only uses .8 volts. but it does just fine with the 1.5 volts, it just dont take it all. agp4x uses the full 1.5v. and agp2x and below uses the 3.3v. and yes i do understand the importance of having the correct voltage.

Why do they use lower voltage?

im not sure, i guess so they can run cooler while still being faster, but ud have to ask a true hardware expert for that one. i just know that agp4x and agp2x arnt compatible (u can use an agp4x card in an agp2x mobo, but the card is gonna run at 2x, it wont hurt the card, but u cant use a 2x gfx card in a 4x slot, first of all the card wont fit, but if its forced it will ruin the mobo and probably the card to). but 8x and 4x are compatible with each other backwards and forwards.

I didn't realise that. Thanx.

It's not the card 'taking' the right voltage, but the system supplying the correct level.

There are 'universal' AGP slots that conform to specs 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 and you can put in any old AGP gfx card and it'll work but there's others (such as on my Soltek) that are 3.0 only and not compatible with older spec cards.

Yeah, I'm of a mind, too, that they do it to overcome heat issues where GPU speeds are spiralling and data is being transferred at a much faster rate.

There's an extra ridge in the 4x+ slots isn't there? Unless you cut another slot in a 2x card's edge connector, you're not really gonna get it in by mistake!

yeah, the 4x has an extra space in bewteen so u cant mess up, and so more data can transfer simultaniously.

Backwards? Uhhhhh depends on the card. Some cards are 8x only (this reduces their price), while some are 8x-4x
