When the RIAA announced that it was suing 50+ more people the other day, I got to thinking about why we don't hear much about law enforcement tracking down and arresting the pedophiles who use KaZaA to freely distribute illegal porn.

I thought about it for a sec, and I guessed that the reason why they aren't arresting people en masse is the opposite of the reason the RIAA is suing file-swappers. We all know that the RIAA sues people because they say that the act of downloading music hurts the recording industry. Are pedophiles and others hurting the illegal porn industry by downloading for free what they used to have to pay for? Instead of supporting the sickos who produce the porn, they are getting it all for free.

Here's the dilemma: should the law go after the pedophiles and wackos who are using KaZaA as a medium for free exchange? If they do, will it scare the other users into buying their porn and supporting the illegal industry instead of downloading it? Maybe thats why we aren't hearing too much about it because the law is trying to keep the arrests quiet to prevent the downloaders and uploaders from being scared away from filesharing (and going back to purchasing instead).

On the flip side, KaZaA and other filesharing networks could be responsible for creating an illegal porn market because they are satisfying the desires of the downloaders. The downloaders eventually get bored at what is on the filesharing networks so they take the next step and actually buy the stuff. If THAT is true, then isn't KaZaA responsible for creating devoted music fans as well, thereby increasing sales?

I think the reason is that on these other porn sites, you have to pay. When you pay, they can then track you down. Which is what we all want.

Just to elaborate:

GOOD: Kazaa is helping the music industry because it creates a market
Kazaa is hurting the ilegal porn industry because it is taking away sales

OK: Kazaa is hurting the music industry because it is taking away sales
Kazaa is hurting the illegal porn industry because it is taking away sales

BAD: Kazaa is helping the music industry because it creates a market
Kazaa is helping the illegal porn industry becasue it creates a market

UGLY: Kazaa is hurting the music industry because it is taking away sales
Kazaa is helping the illegal porn industry becasue it creates a market

We love kazaa because we get free music. We hate kazaa because it aids pedophiles. What does it really do?

If you recieve any Paedophile porn through Kazaa. Like misnamed files etc. Then report the name of the sender to the Kazaa authorities.

And then you got child porn on your computer so your ass is guilty too. Also that person could of just downloaded that and thought it was something else. Damn those people who rename crap on Kazaa.

To say that there may be a good element to pedophile material being shared using any p2p system is at best twisted logic.

As boab says, most people know that if they buy it from sites there is a much higher prospect of being caught. This simple fact surely deters people (at least some) from doing it.

However using p2p systems properly provides a higher degree of protection. That being the case the market increases (those afraid to use normal downloads) and as such the demand for more, new material also increases.

To suggest that downloading pedophile material is analogous with going to your local wal-mart and buying a CD or DVD is at best specious.

No! You are not guilty Arm. You report it immediately. Then delete ALL trace of it from your computer. I admit this can be difficult, because these people are devious B*ds and spread the software all over your computer. There is free software that can delete all this though.

demand for new material is what the law should be preventing first

There is software being spread that buries itself into your comp.? I can just imagine what would happen if a talented hacker wanted to plant evidence on some high-up's computer

I am afraid that is impossible. There will always be a demand. Some of these people are born this way, sadly others become this way through being abused by their elders.
