We will be seeing the first PCI-Express compliant motherboards in Spring.

ATi's next cards (R420, codename Loki) is going to be primarily PCI express, but will ship with a PCI-Express to AGP bridge.

nVidia will carry on with AGP for its next card (nV4x) or so, but may create PCI express versions.

EDIT: Oh yes, PCI express isn't really anything special. Its increased bandwith through the PCI slots basically.
You're only going to notice much difference if you max out something like a PCI IDE controller.
Its like the difference between AGP4x and AGP8x.

I think graphics cards should stay AGP...just to not confuse stuff lol

AGP will probably not be able to handle it all soon, just because PCI express GPUs aren't really need now it doesn't mean they won't be in the future. From what I know, AGP is just accelerated PCI.

then why cant they just accelerate the agp port more instead of making these pci express video cards? its gonna cause a lot of headaches as noobs get new video cards and cant install them into tehir systems. Its bad enough now that people buy agp and only have pci slots, now there are three types of video cards.

I am sorry Mad Cat, but you are completely wrong.

The results will be VERY tangible. Especially when it comes to graphics data.

and will we be able to plug our old PCI cards into the new PCI express or what?..will the cards be completly diff and we will have to buy new cards?

And it shouldnt be called pci express..that sounds gay..it needs to be like agx or something cool like that haha..

3GIO is PCI Express. It stands for 3rd generation I/O; or third generation INPUT/OUPUT.

I agree that PCI Express is kind of a lame name.

One thing you should know about AGP is that it stands for (Accelerated Graphics Port). You also need to know that AGP is pretty much a one way street to the CPU. The exiting thing about 3GIO is that there is going to be data moving in both direction at very fast speeds. No benchmarks are available yet, of course because everyone who is testing them is under non disclosure agreements.

The letters E, and X are way overused already in relation to Extreme alone.........
