Adding A Third Internal Storage Hard Drive

there's no extra ide plug for a third hard disk nor power supply cord. what would i need to buy to get this installed? i'd ask the place i bought the pc it but i can't find the receipt

If you only have One Cd-Rom, you can connect it as a secondary slave, if not, then i guees you will need a PCI Ide Controller or something like....

thanks! i was thinking about trying that. my cd-rom is busted and i've been using my cd-r drive in it's place to install things, etc. this will hold me over until i by a pci ide controller

As Cygnus-Y said, you can hook the drive up to the same cable as your CD/DVD/whatever drive if you only have one; however I would guess from the fact you have no power cables available that you have two...

You'll need another IDE controller, which will be in the form of a PCI card which plugs into your expansion slots and gives you controllers and ports for more IDE drives. I think Adaptec, Maxtor and others make them - shop around .

They'll look something like this (edit: or the one cygnus-y just added to his post ):


For your problem with power cables, you'll need a little y-splitter, which you plug into one of your power cables - they split it into two, so you can hook up another device to the cable.
I'd hook up one hard drive and two optical drives to that cable, to try and balance the power usage between the cables.


These can be bought very cheaply online or at a local computer hardware store.

thanks. i'm curently using the cd-roms second ide plug. whenever i either buy a new rom drive, dvd burner, or need more space is when i'll buy that pci controller thingy. thanks all.

DO NOT BUY ATA IDE CARDS. THEY RUN LIKE CRAP WITH THE CONNECTED HARD DRIVES AND YOU&#39;RE SOOO MUCH BETTER OFF WITH RAID SUPPORT ON YOUR BOARD INSTEAD. RAID you can have upto 8 hard drives. I so encourage you not to get an IDE card.
