I think, if you are as interested as you say, you might enjoy a book by Judge Robert Bork (yes, THAT Robert Bork) called, "Slouching Towards Gomorah".
It explains my POV better than I could can, insofar as what I see being responsible for the "tribalism", etc., that you attest to.
Hmm, obviously parodying Yeats's "slouching towards Bethlehem to be born".

Was that really Bork??

Yes it was, and I believe you have caught his inspiration, also.

Well done.

l've never been to the States, so l can't comment on people's attitude towards sex there. However, there are certain anomalies that make one wonder what is in the minds of some of you. Janet Jackson shows a tit and there is a government enquiry. And yet the trash you turn out as TV entertainment is one long blood fest. You can show people being killed in a million different ways, but god help you if you show a tit! If she'd done that on Australian TV she would have been hailed a hero.

My point is, does this affect American kids? Is the fact that sex is such a taboo, and violence commonplace, a reason America is such a violent place, yet so hung up about sex?

the good old u.s of america is always down on porn but never bats an eye at the endless violence it pumps out throu the media or it`s policy of taking over the world.....its not porn or erotica thats wrong....its violent or non consenting porn that is wrong........ .....adults making love is cool....even if you watch them ......if every body taking part is fine

Lots of things affect American kids, Billy.

We are in some kind of tizzy for the last 4 decades over it.

I have many thoughts on such subjects, but they resist coalescence.

Apropos of nothing, I find myself wondering whether "good, clean, wholesome entertainment" is/was an American phenomenon or if it ever existed elsewhere.

For the most part, it is (to quote our network Morning-Show Babe-ette, Katie Couric) a tempest in a C-cup.

What is more worrying to many is what it says about the state of our culture.

I agree as re: our television violence, music, etc., but this incident is a bit of another Rubicon crossed.

Not making much sense, here, but what's new, huh?

I have always had a theory that sexual repression is the reason behind the fact that the us has more serial killers than any other industrilized nation....

That being said i can still understand why a parent might not want their kid to be exposed to certain things..be it porn..certain religions what ever..and while i dont necessarily agree with said parents choice..i can see the reasoning behind it..of course i believe the safety valve limiting exposure method is doomed for failure in this age...(just like a country trying to repress certain ideas on its citizens or in this case goverments can do much short of all out civil war to stop it..same for the family.....if said citizens get access to other data especially conflicting data they will start thinking for themselves and make choices..both bad ones and good ones..soley based on themselves or what their social order states..

I believe we are more violent because each succeding generation has chosen to be violent for a variety of reasons...not the least of which is THAT VIOLENCE WORKS....if u want an oil field and u are bigger..take it..if u have nukes and everyone is scared of u(North Korea) the world will cut deals with u and show u respect....The girl goes after the jocks for the most part and the alpha males..this an inherited biological response because a violent male will by defintion be ablle to protect her and offspring better then a weaker subdued male..simple biology...and this becomes a self-fullfilling prophecy once u start to believe that the word is getting more deadly every day:

World deadly..Iraq..bird flu..crime..female sees this on subconcious level..chooses alpha male to protect her during these times...alpha males genes passed down including more viloent tendencies..also other males take on persona of more violent males in order to mate this in turn creates each succeding generation to be evn more aggrsive and u go back to step 1...
