I'd go here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;221829 and do what its says about formating etc, then have another go before you get too much installed and have to waste it all by maybe later on having to reformat for some reason or other.
If you want to wait for more answers I'd also post your machine spec' besides the memory.
As for your question on upgrading, well this is as long as a piece of string e-machines did alot of onboard stuff like video and sound cards so it all boils down to money and what you want to use the machine for now and say in a year from now.

either try using fdisk and creating two or 3 partitions THEN install windows 98 onto the first partition

    -or-

if that doesnt work or if you dont want to do it (although i recomend you make partitions anyway) then if you have a broadband connection download windows xp corp and install that instead.

post your specs and well tell you if windows xp is right for you.

NO that is down to you my friend pc's will only do so much its all down to what you want from it and can it give you what you want,if NOT then its an upgrade no other way around it.
What size cpu is it ?
    No video ?
Where you get your info from Device Manager or when you first boot up ?
This COULD be your problem NO video card drivers are installed.
To load Windows have you got a Recovery disc or a normal Windows disc cd ?

nevermind windows xp will be dead slow on there, unless you were to get more ram then it might be better...so try fdisk.

oh and you dont have no video card or sound card they are onboard so teh video ram is probably staling form your real ram.

first i think you should try reinstalling windows 98 because it will run a lot better than xp on your computer but if you want windows xp then you will need at least 128mb but a lot more is recommended. the most your motherboard can handle up to 512. btw, if you are downloading xp make sure to get the corp edition to avoid the activation hassles.

but i recomend you use windows 98 on that system.

how many mhz is your peniutm II processor? if you dont know then right click my computer go to properties and it should say it.
