King Arthur was ambushed and taken to the king of a neighboring kingdom. The king could have killed Arthur but chose to offered King Arthur if could answer this riddle, or he would be killed. He was given a year to do it.

The riddle was: What do women really want?

Such a question would perplex even the wisest man, but King Arthur returned to his kingdom and spoke to everybody: The princess and prostitutes, priests and wise men, the carpenter and court jester. Everyone! No one could give him a good answer. What many people did tell him, was to ask the old witch, for only she would know the answer. The witch was known to demand a high price.

The last day of the year was arriving, King Arthur had no choice but to talk to the witch. The witch agreed to answer his question, but he'd have to accept her price first: To marry Sir Gawain, the most noble and honorable Knight of the Round Table and King Arthur's best friend!

King Arthur was horrified: He refused to force his friend to marry her and have to endure such a burden. She was hideous, hunchbacked, had only one tooth, smelled bad, made obscene noises, totally repugnant.

Well, Sir Gawain, on learning of this, talked King Arthur into it. Sir Gawain would have given his life for King Arthur, or endured torture. So what was more important compared to Arthur's life and maintaining the Round Table?

The wedding was proclaimed, and the witch answered the riddle:
What a woman really wants is to be able to be in charge of her own life.

Everyone instantly knew that the witch had uttered a great truth. The neighboring King spared King Arthur's life and granted him total freedom.

The wedding of Sir Gawain and the witch was horrible! King Arthur felt both relief and anguish. Sir Gawain was proper as always, gentle and courteous. The old witch put on her worst manners, ate with her hands, belched and farted, and generally made everyone feel miserable.

The wedding night and Sir Gawain entered the bedroom. What a sight! The most beautiful woman he'd ever seen lay waiting for him!
Sir Gawain was astounded. The beauty said that since he had been so kind to her (when she'd been a witch), half the time she would be her horrible, deformed self, and the other half, she would be her beautiful maiden self.
"Which", she asked Sir Gawain, "would he want her to be during the day and which during the night?"

What a cruel situation! Sir Gawain began to consider his predicament:
During the day a beautiful woman for his friends to see. But to spend his night with an old ugly witch? Or by night a beautiful woman to enjoy many intimate moments?

    What would Sir Gawain chose:

The Noble Sir Gawain's answer to the loathly lady was that he would let her choose for herself. Upon hearing this, she announced that she would be beautiful all the time, because he had respected her and had let her be in charge of her own life.
