Trojan Virus Slowed Down P2p

I use Norton Antivirus 2003 like many of you when I should use the 2004. The problem with 2004 is that its constant scanning slows one's system down so much that it interferes with downloading. 2003 does not scan new files immediately, so the system isn't bogged down, but it is very easy to catch a virus. I have been hit many times by virus. Although most of them don't crash my systems immediately, they slow my P2P speed down so much that I have to reinstall anyway. I notice that evertime I reinstall my system, the downloading speed is great. But it soon deteriorates back to slow after a while, which varies from week(s) to month(s).

Well, I just reinstalled my systems about a month ago. P2P speed was good for about two weeks. I noticed that it started to slow down a bit, but still usable, just longer wait. Then it started to slow down even more half of the time. After a couple of weeks more, it slowed down even more to the points where I was frustrated.

Well, I haven't scanned my systems for viruses for a couple of weeks although I do keep the virus definitions updated, so I decided to do so. I found a Trojan virus in a Window's application's temporary file. It was difficult to delete, but finally was deleted.

Well I was at the point where I was only uploading, and can't really download much more than a couple of Kb/s. Well I did some reading and opened up ports on my firewall and router like you guys. Well, opening up ports on the firewall helped a little, but it fluctuates quickly back to a couple of KB/s again in minutes or a couple of hours. Very frustrating. Nothing worked.

Getting back to Norton Internet Security (NIS), NIS 2004 worked ok when I first tried it a month ago--the BT light flashed green initially and several times later. Well since NIS 2002 has worked for me in the past, I decided to downgrad back to 2002. The slow downloading speed didn't changed. There is nothing left to do but to reinstall at this point.

I restored my systems with Norton Ghost and went back to NIS 2002. I am using Shadow's 5.8.9 version of BT, and it is good again. The lights are green again, whereas it was yellow 99.9% of the time before and I had a lot of tracking problems too before. My first download was flying, my second is terrible, but the lights are green, and the client connected to the tracker quickly and without any error messages.

Well I definitely will scan my computer at least once a week from now on. And I know that my ports are already opened properly so I shouldn't have to open it later. And I don't have to update my Norton stuffs for it to work either.

I know there is no way to prevent from getting screwed by a virus with Norton Antivirus 2003. I certainly don't want to use 2004 since it bogs down my systems so much. The only solution is to back-up my whole system and restoring it when I have to.

Here is my solution. I have two copies of my C-Drive cloned with Norton Ghost and hidden away (invisible) with Partition Magic. Hell, if anything screws me up again, I am ready. With several click, I can restore my whole system in 10 minutes. Hehe, screw me up all you want you stinking viruses.

have you tryed to visit the config table in norton,maybe there is some options....and why dont you try another AVprog,myself switched from norton to kapersky just some days ago,i choosed kapersky because it had a lrger virusbase....82000 known viruses compared with nortons 64000....and my first scan,it found a trojan that was installed on my computer that norton missed...

your choice to let it miss something else again, but maybe next time it will really fuck up your PC

Are you using a firewall to protect yourself from outgoing packets / ports, these could let someone remotely control your system...

Anyway, try ZoneAlarm (Free is nice, but I prefer Pro) and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition works great for me..

Although Norton AV has a smaller virus definition, but according to some testing reviews, it can detect 100% wild viruses. Kapersky may have a larger number of virus definitions, but I wonder if it also can detect 100% wild viruses. I have to admit that I do think that Norton misses some viruses. I think I found a worm a while back with ACE Mega Codec virus scanner that Norton missed. I do remember when I was running PC-cillin and Norton AV at the same time, and Norton detected several viruses after PC-cillin quarantined it.

Damn, I have used Norton for so long that I am reluctant to switch.

Has anyone else used Kapersky? Is it good compared to Norton? Is it worth switching? What about any other Antivirus program? Anything else that is even better?

If space is not a problem, what is the versatile and comprehensive Antivirus program out there?

I like avg but you will get plenty of norton fanboys to tell you keep norton :/

Since all Symantec AV uses the same AV definition update, they all have the same virus definition data base. Norton Corporate Ed scan new files immediately, so it is like Norton AV 2004. When Norton scans, there is much cpu power left to do anything other than downloading. This is the case for any virus scanner. Any virus scanner (large or small in size) eats up cpu power. Is there any function in Norton AV Corporate Ed that is not in Norton AV 2003 Pro? If there is something good in corporate ed., I would definitely switch. BT has a Norton AV Corporate 8.11, but it is only 33mb, not full version. AVG AV 7.209 is also on BT, but it is only 9Mb. I had an old version of PC-cillin (which is small in size), and when it scans, it almost freezes up the computer.

The only disappointing thing with Norton AV 2003 is that it can't quarantine certain viruses. And what's worse is when it can't delete certain virus. The worse one that I caught was one from Microsoft Office 2003 Keygen. It froze Norton AV 2003, and then the whole computer.

Humm, no quick answer. Kaspersky full version on BT is an option though. AVG is so small, and I am biased toward the bigger programs. Lame, but instinctive. Hehe.

one of the reasons also that i got tired of norton was that when it found viruses,even spyware ,there was some it couldnt delete...and that makes me feel like its not powerful enough...the funny thing is when i use adaware it find the same spyware and deletes it without any problem...so what kind of AV program is that....!!!

I have to admit that I am growing weary of Norton. I think I am ready to try Kaspersky now.
