I recently tried to reinstall Windows XP Pro but the damn disk must have been scratched or something because it refused to do much at all...it didnt't start formatting but when it went to check the HD it came back with an error saying that either I didn't have enough memory or that my disc was corrupt...

Anyhow I then tried to load up Windows XP normally but it won't let me saying that the hal.dll is missing and I need to reinstall it...

However I have no idea as to how to reinstall it...

I have new Windows XP disks on their way to me in the post but I'm wondering if there is anythingI can do inthe mean time to get onto my computer..?

btw, I'm a complete noob at this sort of stuff...

edit: I have dloaded a copy of the hal.dll but still don't know what to do with it.

Any help would be gratefully received, I won't have much access to the intenet but I will try to answer any questions ASAP...

Youll need to boot into the recovery console and copy hal.dll from the windows xp cd to the other box.

    xpand Y:\i386\hal.dl_ X:\Windows\System32\

Where X is the drive letter of the hard drive you are working with, and Y is your cd-rom

You might as well run a bootcfg /rebuild from the recovery console as well so it finds the new hal when it boots.

Btw, hal is the hardware abstraction layer

If it's bad media then your burning the same corrupted data to a disk. I can not see why that would help.

Strangely burning a bad disc sometimes yields a good disc. That's my experience.

Only reason I would post the info is if it worked for me
