At the prompt type:
FORMAT C:
And press return.
Note: Replace the C with whatever drive letter you want to format if you have more than one.
someone told me to erase all partitions, then format, cause some sectors in my hard drive are messup
if u have to delete partitions type fdisk instead of format and go to delete primary partition then select the one to delete then create a new one using full size and after it is created u have to restart then when u get to teh prompt again type format C:
i try it but it say "bad command or file name"Originally posted by Virtualbody1234@20 February 2004 - 14:48

I inserted the MS-DOS startup disk and turn on my comp this is what it shows
Staring...
A:\>
A:\>
what do i do after this?
what operating system and what file system are you using? also what version of the startup disc are you using? is it a 98,me or xp startup disc?
the operating system is xp and the startup disk is also xp
Do you have the XP CD?
You can bootup with that CD and there are tools to partition and format there.
Btw.
startup disk is also xpThose two things aren't the same.using MS-DOS startup disk
the xp startup disc will not work, it is missing teh format and fdisk tools try to get a hold of a 98 or me startup disc, u might be able to find one on the internet, they have the tools that you need to get teh job done...or you could use the xp install cd and b4 it installs it wwill ask where to install and you can delete the partition then recreate it and format from there.
good luck.
i try that all ready but when i format its say that this disk cant be formated and when i try it again it formated fine it just took me longer than usual and when i when to install windows it freezes half way
a friend told me that its the disk thats mess up and to fix it you have to formatted using startup disk
he said that while formatting it will look for unreadeble sectors and block them or something like that
