if it was a bin,cue are you sure it was vcd and not svcd(if it was svcd means you friends player doesn't support svcd)

I have the same problem, but there is a way around it. My player supports svcd but my dad's player does not. These players are able to play svcd but don't recognize the header for svcd. When I burn him a movie I fix the header first.

First use vcdgear to convert the cue/bin to mpeg.
Use TMPGEnc with the instructions from here.
Now burn with any program that will burn mpeg to vcd. I use the last freeware version of VCDEASY v1.1.5.2. You will see error messages in vcdeasy but burn anyway and it will work.

    edit: fixed a link
