Friend's Computer Problem

I've got a friend, and we went to themexp.org, and I was setting up a new boot screen for him. Well, after replacing the ntoskrnl.exe (obviously i created a back up in another folder), we restarted the computer, and it failed to start correctly. It would go to the screen asking which mode to start it in. We tried mode after mode (ie safe, normal, last known good configuration) and it would hang. so we held f10 at the beginning and did a system recovery. problem is, he lost all his files, programs etc.

His System Restore feature had no dates past the night before, after the recovery.

Is there any way that he can recover his lost programs and files? I'm getting him to download 'restoration' right now, but it would be nice if there was a way to go back and restore it, along with his programs? (his parents programs & files, yes he shared a computer, yes we're fucked)

Any help is appreciated.

edit: and the copied ntoskrnl was also gone along with the folder I had created for it.

Sounds like a job for a linux live disk :gunsmile:

If you are new to linux, then get make sure you get a live disk with X on it.

Or you could use the windows XP cd and use the recovery console and type in

copy c:\xxxxx\ntoskrnl.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32

Replace the xxxxxx with where you backed up the original copy

BTW LSA, them sites with the bootable ISO linux distros is awsome B)

how important is the ntoskrnl?

I suspect he may have also had a trojan that interfered when there was a change..

It's very important. Windows can not function without it.

Evil Gemini's suggestion should work.

When it comes to installing custom boot screens there should be 2 ntoskrnl files. One for service pack one and one for a pc without service pack one. The authours of the bootscreens do not always include both. If you replace the wrong one, for example a ntoskrnl for a system without service pack one and you have service pack one installed it will screw it up.

Quite frankly I don't bother with them.

Btw, I can't imagine where a Linux live disk would come in at.

I would try a few undelete programs. Encase and R-studio are meant to be very effective.

I did the same thing but it really got messed up & i got really really mad and beated the hell out of my computer,it broke.It took me a least 5months
