you could try turning off scheduled tasks, in the scheduled tasks folder click on Advanced and stop using scheduled tasks. but it doesn't sound like its actually a scheduled task, it sounds like some program of part of xp is having problems and is setting up a 'scan disk on next reboot'
googled it quickly and found this which had 2 suggestions, virus or some kind of bug:

Also if you have any kind of program running in the background for fixing your computer eg that Norton doctor thing. The settings for that might be worth looking into.

wtf?? norton disk doctor isnt there anymore. or speed disk. a bunch of apps from systemworks r gone! were did they go? should i do a reinstall??

u could try backing up everything, and then switching to ntfs. join the club of ntfs users, no more scanning, and better security and reliablilty with ntfs file systems

Good god its been a week! Still no solution? Mabey time for a clean install.Back up format , reinstall . What have you to lose? A nice clean faster computer. Some people do this every 6 months problems or not. B)
