You'll need a program like hotmail popper, instructions and download can be found on the msgplus forums
SP

I'm sure there is a better way to do this, but if you really don't want another program, you could set up another email account to check your hotmail account and then check that email account. ie
instead of hotmail -> thunderbird
hotmail -> another account -> thunderbird
i know that http://www.fastmail.fm do a free account that can check hotmail and there are quite good instructions on their website.
Its a very crappy way to do it but...
Why not just ditch Hotmail? It is possibly the worst email service on the internet. I know it is a pain notifiying all your contacts of the change of address, but you're probably going to do it some day anyway.
Recently i had friends complaining that their hotmail account was disabled without warning, due to the miserly 2mb inbox becoming full of spam. This is yet another questionable strategy by msn to make more money, by pushing their newbie customers to pay for extra storage.
I recommend http://hotpop.com for a great free pop email service, including a 10 mb inbox and great spam protection.
does this email service works with thunder bird or OutLook?

Personally i've got a www.fastmail.fm account and thats 10MB. Its got IMAP access so it works with outlook and thunderbird. liquid just said that hotpop has POP access, so it would work with them just as well. I'm not sure which of POP or IMAP is preferable, the fastmail website recommends IMAP but they're biased.
I agree that fastmail is a great service, and IMAP does indeed have advantages over POP. However, as far as i know, fastmail's free accounts don't provide an smtp server, requiring the use of the users own isp's to send any mail. With some isp's not allowing this on their servers, things could get a bit complicated.
From the FAQ of thunderbird:
FAQ LinkCan I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?
No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. There are also freeware applications available that will let you do the same thing, such as Hotmail Popper
Another example is Gotmail, which is a utility to non-interactively download email from a Hotmail account. It can download messages from all folders, messages from certain folders, or new messages only. There are options to delete downloaded messages or mark them as read. Gotmail can forward messages to other email addresses or save them as local mbox-style mailboxes.
I suggest you should always start from the FAQ first!
