Actually, I couldn't find any Martin Mcarthy on the private sites I checked, but I did find a few albums by Angel and Airwaves. But I get the point. And thank you for possibly introducing me to some new music.

Also, if you were serious about adding me to Soulseek, then add me under the name "h8uthemost"(without the quotes). I only use the name Annoyed here. I'll add you under the name you use here.

By the way, I have an actual question about Soulseek. I know this isn't a discussion thread, but I just thought I would ask. The other night I was telling a friend of mine about Soulseek, and how much I'm liking it, and recommended that he too should try it.

Well, he said something about it being too risky. That he didn't want the RIAA coming after him, or something like that.

Now I know that no form of file sharing is risk free, being bittorrent or other programs like Soulseek. But using bittorrent, I was never afraid of getting busted. Usually because the kind of companies that bust the bittorrent sites, probably wouldn't put the time and money into trying to bust all the users of the site. Only site owners.

I also never had any fears while using Limewire a few years ago when I first started downloading music. As you're only downloading from that program. Unlike Soulseek, where you're also uploading.

Just after he told me that, and said he'll stick with the private bittorrent sites, this kind of got me a little paranoid. So how safe do you think Soulseek is?

    Thanks for any info.

It's impossible to say. SoulSeek servers are entirely in the hands of the developer. Bittorrent sites particularly private " invite-only" give the idea of security; thats a fallacy and gives a false sense of security. The complete records of Oink landed for example in the hands of the authorities. The records of IPs could easily be traced in time and no doubt monitored. Also the trading of accounts on these private sites are a great risk to their members. For now I feel confident that SoulSeek is safe and provides the users with enough privacy and security. This does mean unfortunately only allowing users one knows, to one's "friends list". Also as you are already aware the IP of the user from whom one downloads, is not visible. All this... not to mention the general high quality and that constantly new users are coming online, who might just have that rare music file one has been searching on other networks for so long, without luck..

Right. Ok, I guess there's always that chance with any type of file sharing. Just whenever I start with any new type of program, especially where you have to upload, these type of questions pop into mind. As I'm sure it does with many others. Guess all we can do is hope for the best.

Well, thank you for the info. You have put my mind at ease. I didn't even think of the IP's not being shown. So that's definitely good. And I got you added on my friends list.

The best is to make friends. Ensure that the user you want to download from is added to your list. I believe if you donate one gets privileges too.

I actually haven't had long queue's. I guess I've been lucky. I think the longest I've came across was maybe 20 queue. And that went by pretty quickly.

But then again, I download a lot of older music. So maybe that could be a reason why I've had good luck.

    hi

i am new on this site and, as a slsk lover, i'd like to ask you that question: how much do you like - or no - privileged users?

cuz, well, i don't really appreciate when a user takes a slot when s/he's supposed to wait for his turn

    what about you?

    cheers!

If no-one was prepared to donate, would Slsk survive in any worthwhile capacity ? I'm glad the server costs are met (by someone else) & don't begrudge them a little queue jumping .
