My FX51 system just started rusty chainsaw sounds, now its gone. Opened to case to the wiff of smoking silicon. What more is there to say?

Sounds like the heatsink fan has failed.
Did the HSF come with the processor? If so, you shouldn't have a problem since the whole package should be covered by warranty. But it will not cover damage to your mobo. Don't tell them it started making funny noises - they may say you should have investigated it. Simply tell them you came home and found it in it's current condition.
If you got the HSF separately you are stuffed, AMD won't cover the chip and the HSF makers won't cover consequential loss to the chip or mobo.
.Political correctness is based on the principle that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
could be a joke...hopefully! That would suck ass. You should be able to get replacements but prob not on mobo...exspensiveeeee

Yo ho ho, MadCat.
Nice try.
I can't think of anything in a PC capable of making " rusty chainsaw" noises.

Yeah I dont either...
My friends POS emachine made wierd noises kinda like that before. On startup like the fan was going dead on the HS I think though.

Yeah Dawg, but even my old "POS" eMachine would shut down the comp if it sensed a faulty/failing CPU fan.
As will most other ( especially high end) motherboards.
This is a joke.
But, fear not MadCat, we are laughing with you.....
