already decided:

the almost-top-of-the-line gfoce coming out on the 13th
see if u can make it an athlon 64 (fx-53 perferred)

sound card is already set...

all other options still need to be decided... make sure the mobo is not shitty...

around<s> 2000 </s> 2300 (give or take 200)

hes upped the limit on the price...

For 2k make sure he has to have a top PSU. I mean none other than the Antec 430w. Don't take chances & go inferior (cheapo) on the PSU & case.

thats what i came up with and thats without the Video card, basically if you want a decent FX 53 comp your gonna want to pay more then 2k. cause if you get a FX-53 and the rest of the comp be trash, you might as well not get the FX-53. i'd much rather go with the Athlon64 3200 or 3400+. you still get the 64-bit power but at around half the cost and it wont be out of date for a while. i'll actually be building a new system in about 2 months with a Athlon64 3400.

EDIT: you can bump the PC3200 down to only 512MB's, and also knock the Athlong FX-53 to a Athlon64 3400+ then it will be under $2000 even with the new nVidia card that will be $500

I STILL do not see the point in spending all that money on the FX-53. Given that it is an excellent processor and it has 64 bit capabilities, I still think that the Intel 2.8 C

with PC 3500-4000 Ram and a P4P800 or P4PC800 or Abit Max 3 would be a better deal (and more fun to play with) than the FX-53. And the performance of an overclocked 2.8 C @ 3.5 or 3.6 GHz will perform similarly or better than a FX-53 in most cases. Keep in mind we are talking about over 1 GHz front side bus.

Then your friend can save his or her money and get a better case or cooling solutions (ie water). I personally think this is the WORST time to make such an upgrade. I myself have been tempted to upgrade, but what holds me back is the fact that right around the corner are some HUGE technological advances. I know I would feel stupid in less than 3 or 4 months for wasting money now, when my current system is great for the price I purchased it for, and when I purchased it (last June). That means that if I upgrade again this June or July, every month I spent less than $160 per month on my system, and it will still have value when I do retire it, and my monitor should be good for at least another year, which was 1/4 of the value of my current system.

heres why: sometime this year, XP 64 bit will come out. linux 64 is already out, and all games and other things running on it report EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE. reviews from xbit labs and others show that the fx53 beats the p4ee under most conditions.

also there is no fsb on the fx53 (according to what i heard. some others report a 1600mhz bus...) so...

his decision is set: its gotta be an fx 53..... also i am sure that many people will agree with this one.

@bigdawg: slip of the finger with the "gfoce" on my part. nice specs tho. the one issue is that he needs space so he already has a 200gig hdd in mind for about the same price. nice idea tho...
