This still should not have happened IMO. My 2200 is running now with no thermal compound on the stock HSF at 41.
Surely you've at least got a thermal pad right? [/b][/quote]
I hate to break it to you guys but you do not need thermal compund for your chip. Sure, its going to help temps A LOT, but it is not fatal.

I have the remenants of the thermal pad, id say about 45% left on the heatsink when i applied it.

it's very unlikely you will get a new cpu now since you've opened up the pc, you've invalidated the warrenty.

your best chance now is to take the heatsink off and apply some artic silver and attach it back and watch what happens

agreed, you should buy some arctic silver 5 next time your out and then take off your heatsync and apply it using the guide found somewhere on this website...

oh and at your comment about the chip not lasting as long, well chances are that it will probably be replaced with a newer, faster, probably 64bit chip long before it has come close to the end of its lifetime...thats my opinion anyway...

The PC is 7 months old, I should not have to worry about core temps etc.
The reason it's gone wrong is because "A" It's either a pice of crap or "B" the idot who put it together used cheap thermal paste that would of popped out after a few months.
After looking at how easy it is to build a PC i wish that i had built my own, It's a case of live & Learn.
Lets remember that the Bios on this MSI Board will shut down your pc when the CPU reaches it's Max temp, This has happend three times, The core temp was 87C.
Before I had no knowledge of CPU's Etc, So i think i have done well in finding out with all your help, "Thank you".

Perhaps clocker there is a lesson to be lurnt, Check the CPU temp every now and Then in the bios, Thank you for the advice

Justin....
Despite all it's glaring faults I don't see how you can blame AOL for a hot CPU.

It may not be right, but I see absolutely no reason why we can't blame them.

@Baz, have you checked the thermal compound yet, fer gawd's sake.

he says he doesnt want to check it because he still has teh warranty and he thinks the chip wont last very long anymore so he wants a new one. but i cant blame him, its their fault and they should give him a new one.
