Thread: Noobie Needs Help, Google Cant Find Me!

  1. #1
    Hi folks,
    Yep, i use front page, i know, i know, i can hear you all laughing!
    I've been reading the threads looking for some help, saw lots of comments etc but i have to admit, i found it a lot easier to use than dreamweaver!! I just chose what i wanted, slapped it on the page and hey presto!!
    As you can probably tell i am definitely not a techi on the computer,

    BTW - now that i've designed my lovely site, got it uploaded etc, google cant find it!! Got a techie to look at it and he slagged it to bits, said i had so much junk at the start, and it wouldn't do this and that etc, etc, etc.

    So my question is this, what do I remove, how do i get google to pick it up. Got my domain thru 123 reg, which has free searches including google.

    There you have my dilema, are there any gentle techies out there who can help??

    ok first of all loose that music man , you might think its cool but yuk lol

    next your meta file info is how search engines find your site

    do a bit of reading about meat files and keywords

    the text is too big man , looks like its designed for primary school users

    i hate centered text lol

    colors make it hard to read , concider color choices with backgrounds

    hey its not bad for a first go , i have seen much worse

    i teach web page design and construction at tafe , if ya need some tips pm me and i will see what i can do

    Google has you here

    Its not because of frontpage that you are not higher ranked. For it there are several reasons.

    The domain name is too popular. Delicate touch will have several results including porn which might be higher than you.

    Use good keyword and good meta description to describe your website. Title your webpages.

    Feedback on site:

    The background is too light hence the links have to be darker for it to be properly readable.

    Font is too big and inconsistent resulting being unprofessional.

    Align the text properly even at my resolution(1024X768) it runs beyond the screen.

    The text is not well edited. Visit the contact page and it says "To Book a treatment or for more information." Maybe it should rather be "To book a treatment or For more information" contact so and so. Similarly on other pages.

    Make all your headings of a consistent font & font size and body text should be consistent in the same manner. If you are comfortable with css then use that.

    The music is soothing for a while but gets annoying if someone stops to read everything.

    This is what I observed by just breezing through it quickly. If you want more feedback will be happy to help you out, but maybe first incorporate the above suggestions.

    Goodluck! Not bad for the first time!

    Great advice given I.am

    Make sure you have decent linkbacks to your site, best way to get known in search engines.

    Thanks TRiley&#33;

    Yup, apparantly it matters more which sites link back to you. If its a higher ranking site linking back to you then you definetly get good PR on google.

    Thanks everyone&#33;
    Feedback better than i feared, expected to get slagged off&#33;&#33;
    Will scuttle away and see what changes i can make.
    Will go back and check who i&#39;m linked with and who i can link with.
    Reading up onthe mets stuff will be next but if its worse than a recipe book then i think i&#39;ll flounder, but will give it a try&#33;&#33;

    Thanks again, always knew there were hearts of gold under all that bravado&#33;&#33;

    Ever heard of tough love?
    • Get rid of that music. Sure, it&#39;s cool, but it gets really annoying after a while. I wrote an XBL binding object for Firefox that alerts me whenever a site attempts to play music. The first thing I do after that is leave immediately. Many people (including me) listen to music while they browse and you&#39;ll do nothing to piss them off. Also, you might crash older computers or computers with sound cards that accept only one input stream.
    • Make the text smaller&#33; 7em font size? If you want to make your page accessible to users with visibility problems, define a Braille stylesheet with <style type="text/css" media="braille">.
    • Dump FrontPage. Really. Get Dreamweaver of Beauty HTML, they&#39;re much better and they won&#39;t invalidate your page like FrontPage. By the way, this is what happened when I tried validating it in XHTML 1.1, the current standard.
    • Use the same design throughout the site. It just looks unprofessional. If you want, you can create a splash page with a different style (like you did), but link only to the main page from it.
    • Don&#39;t tell people to contact you via email. Many people don&#39;t have an email client on their computer. Also, you&#39;ll get killed by spambots. The best thing to do would be to use a server-side script to email data to you (I don&#39;t think you can do that on Tiscali), the next best is to use something a human would understand but not a bot, like email [at] domain [dot] com.
    But I can&#39;t complain too much, it looks clean and actually works, unlike some pages. You should submit yourself to Google or use <meta /> content or robots.txt to let them index you how you want.

    If you need more help or reference, go here or here.

    Hope this helps.

    Re-resubmit to Google.

    And your bullets break and text overflows on an 800x600 screen (web standard). Put this somewhere in the <head> tag:
    Code:
    &#60;style type=&#34;text/css&#34; media=&#34;screen&#34;&#62;
     &nbsp; html, body
     &nbsp; {
     &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;overflow &#58; wrap;
     &nbsp; }
    &#60;/style&#62;
    Hope this helps.
