A WOMAN gave birth to a healthy boy after doing her own Caesarean with a kitchen knife, it was revealed yesterday.
The 40-year-old, who lived in an area with no electricity, running water or sanitation, had experienced labour problems.
It is thought to be the first self-Caesarean operation survived by both a mother and her baby.
A doctor who treated her later at the nearest hospital, an eight-hour drive away in rural Mexico, said "She sliced herself open in three attempts... and delivered a male that breathed."
Before passing out, the mum told one of her children to call a nurse.
The doctor, writing in an international journal, said a mum's instinct to save her child can lead to "extraordinary acts."
