its an old torrent, ie meaning where the poster got the torrent/uplaoded the torrent have gotten i new tracker

Yea either find it and start over, or goto the suprnove forums and ask someone to seed the complete file
im not gonna understand this bit about having to start again,
is it really tracker dependant?
surely as long as its the same file just repacked under another tracker you can just resume it? it the exact same data? should the clinet read what it has of the file and then start filling in the gaps again?

is it all to do with what each individualtracker adds to the bits of data that prevents this?

No, it doesnt matter what tracker. As long as its the same exact file. Check the filesize and try to find one the same.
