no ide slots needed, thats very old technology. pci slots arent really too needed becuase of everything being onboard these days, but id still go for 5 which is standard these days. agp slot for sure. might wanna wait a while for pci express, which will replace pci and agp.

for processor, well it depends which company you like better, amd or intel. The amd processors tend to give more bang for your buck. if you have the money, fgo for an athlon 64 fx 53\51\ or amd 64 3400+. They give around the same performance as teh pentium 4 cpus of the same price range, but thats in 32bit software, and in 64bit it will be veyr much improved...

AMD 64.

Which means of course that you will need PC3200 memory or better, not PC2700 as suggested by Singaboiy. And you will want 1GB for when 64-bit windows comes out (minimum spec I believe) so get 2x512MB for full dual channel operation, or a mobo with 4 memory slots so you can get 2x256MB now and add the same later.

Here's a link to AMD recommended motherboards. It varies depending on which level of processor you select.

is it really worth getting amd 64 over amd 2700+?

it only makes sense if you are preparing for 3yrs from now
when 64 bit will be used to its abilities.

But amd 2700+ will be enough to play games and run graphic design programs, right?

64bit seems more than I'll ever need. Or is it?

Another question: should I order online or through a computer store and get them
to order and put together the parts?
I live in Can the currency exchange plus S&H seems to offset the low prices. Or
am I totally wrong.

I know I seem like a n00b but I just don't want to get burned again.

u dont seem like a newbie, most newbies are always saying that buying OEM is teh cheapest way lol.

go 64bit if u can afford it. if your not going 64bit though, then the best deal is to buy a 2500+ and OC it to 3200+, which is easily acheiveable using stock cooling and pc3200 ram. a lot of members on this board have acheived this and higher, and I have also done this with a computer I built for my aunt. The temps are pretty good too.

not sure bout edd and non ecc.

sata is the fasterm and newer type of interface for connecting the hard drive. will offer slighty better performance, plus u wont have those bulky big ide ribbon cables (well unless you get rounded ones)

for a motherboard, i beleive that the via kt800 (think thats it, well teh latest via chipset anyway) is the current leader for motherboard chipsets, and the nvidia nforce 3 is the next best i beleive. Good companies are abit, asus and gigabyte (there are a few other good companies, but these are the main ones).
