In that picture you can see exactly what I was talking about.
The two long sides are cut away to provide clearance for the mounting arms.

    Yes it is.

The bottom of the Zalman HS is not flat.
It is relieved (stepped) on two sides, so only the center will make contact with the chip.
It may be that this won't matter...I don't know how much of the northbridge chip is active (i.e. hot)...but I decided not to find out.
The little stock sink that Asus provides makes contact with the entire surface of the chip....
Come on clocker, its a Zalman product, how could you pass that up?

The core of the chipset is in the middle of the chip, the heat is only in the middle, nothing around the edges. here is what its like:

its just like an amd cpu, except that there is a plactis coding around it that protects it.

OK, I'll take your word on it.

    Doesn't much matter now.
Now that I'm back on air cooling the damn thing won't fit with my 7000cu installed anyway.

I just mounted one of these on my 9600XT.
The jury is still out on how effective it is, but the look is very good...

    Edit:
Who here has a 9600/9800XT with Overdrive?
What sort of temps does it report?
This card is new to me and I have very little baseline data to go by...
