  1. #1
I have a new Western Digital 160GB ATA harddisk
I'm going to format it under format in XPPro using NTFS
What is the best allocation unit size ?
4096 bytes appears when format is run
    Is this the best size?
    the choices are default ,512 ,1024 ,2048 ,4096 bytes

    Any help appreciated !

The default should work just fine. The other options may work better if you have a lot of small file like pictures or a lot of large files like entire movies. I forgot which one is best for which, but the default is good for everything.

Since you have such a large HDD, you can make like a 2-3 gig partition just for Windows and any programs on it, and have everything else on another partition. This can also help with performance (sometimes less is better) and protect your data from crap like viruses and spyware.
