he knows physically which hard drive is broken, he wants to know if the one in his computer at teh moment, the working drive, is 8mb cahce or 2mb cahce...

How about: look at the drive, note the model number, look it up on the manufacturer's web site. That's usually a pretty surefire way of getting reliable information.
