My CD-RW drive has dissapeared from windows both in explorer and disk managment but bios can see it. I am not really sure when it happened but it has been like this for a few weeks at least. I have tried searching google for it and see other people with similar problems but whatever I try to do to fix it never works. All the cables are plugged in and not loose and the jumpers are set right. I have WinXP Pro SP1, Shuttle SB75G2 computer, Sony CD-RW drive

Did you try system restore ? Or go to device manager and delete cdrive ,reboot let windows install. Problem with drivers or regristry ? Are you running Nero or easy cd creator ? Nero has a fix I believe.

do you have a bootable cd, is so try to boot to the cd, if it does not boot to a cd, even though the bios sees it, it may be bad, the drive that is. do you have another cd rom you could replace it with just to test out the theroy.

try reloading windows on top of windows to correct all the eronious registry entries and it will come back.
Why females insist on putting the lid down is beyond me.
