Yesterday my sister was complainging about some spyware on her computer (my old computer). It was a search bar, and search program, cahnged the default search engine, and our home page.

I removed teh spyware with spysweeper, then I used alt ctrl del to close any programs that shoudln't be there, ran msconfig and stopped tha stuff starting up, then I deleted all the spyware folders (there was no add\remove programs uninstall thing). Finally I ran hijackthis! and I removed a few things relating to the spyware.

Final result was:
Changed the home page back, that works fine.
Changed teh default search engine back (google)
Typing something into google home page to search works.
BUT typing something into the top address bar in IE results in "this page cannot be displayed."

Tried numerous different times to apply the regustry fix to make google the search engine, not working.

This was all yesterday, today after a couple restarts and stuff still doesn't work, and i just finished running hijackthis! and spysweeper again and they find nothing. Here is the hijackthis! log:

rossco, this isn't a fix but a curiousity

will it work if you type in the full url to the address bar? I mean with the http://www.url.com rather than just www.url.com

I've had the same annoying nuance on my g/f's laptop for months. I fixed the spyware that caused it but never did get the IE address bar to work properly again.

i actually had a problem kind of like this on my new compter.. what i did.. full norton search deleted that all, then full spybot sad and a full adaware search, use those they work the best imo but im not a genius when itcomes to comps as we no lol

it worked then... like i couldnt get on supr or torrentbits then it worked... also see if when u search in google and click a link it works cause it didnt for me and now it does...

last: i beleive there is a setting in internet options related to searching like when u just type google.com as opposed to www.google.com or http://www.google.com

i dont remember where it is sorry but try those thing i hope i can repay back the help you gave me

ok, no, sorry. You misunderstood.

If i was to type, for example: www.hotmail.com into teh address bar, it will work. If i type http:\\www.hotmail.com it also works.

but if i was to search for something, like say i wanted a review on the asus a7n8x, i would just type into my address bar exactly what i want ('asus an7n8x review' is what i would type) then i press enter and it will automatically search google for me.

It works on my computer this way, works on any computer i have used with IE, but on my sister's computer it WILL NOT WORK.

thanks for trying to help, you don't heve to pay me back, bbut thanks.

I will try antivirus scan, i forgot about doing that, good idea there.

if i go to www.google.com, search for something, it works. It will search. I click a link, it works.

Everything works fine except if I want to search for something directly in the address bar. Know what i mean? it just gets page cannot be displayed.

I have tried numerous times to apply the registry patch that make sgoogle teh default search engine, to no avail. I have tried resetting all IE settings to default, won't even search on msn search...(again, works at www.msn.com, but not through teh address bar)

I hope you guys know what i mean...im sure i am not the only person in teh world that searches this way...

im thinking it's probably some corrupt file or registry problem so maybe if i reinstall IE??? how would i go about that?

edit: champ, it is the latest version, 6.0 with SP1, details are in that log i posted...actually i don't think anything lower than 6.0 runs on winxp lol.

shit thats something I've never done before

how about completely uninstalling it and downloading it from the MS site for clean re-installation?
