First choose what motherboard and processor you want to get, then you will know if u want the sata drive or an ide drive.(if the motherboard supporets sata, go with it, if not, then don't...)

GHz is NOT a valid way to compare a CPU.
For what your friend wants to do an AMD chip will be just fine.

IF he wants to spend around $1000 buy a 2500XP with an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, with 2X512MB of ram..from corsair or mushkin..get some good stuff, then buy an ATI X800XT PE and that should be under $1000, I think. If not get 2X256MB of ram lol it would be an awesome computer.

x800xt to play NFSU and watch DVDs

    1gig of ram.

He'd be better off going with a nice 17" or 19" LCD with the money he saves from not buying 1gig of ram and not buying an x800xt.

edit: XxKrNxStyLeZxX, go with the deluxe of that board if you can afford it.

or, a better option (some say it has more features than teh asus boards) is the abit NF7-S, or a cheaper alternative, also good, is the gigabyte 7N400L pro.

You want the last one- the "deluxe".
It has excellent on-board sound and supports SATA.

Buy your case and PSU separately...that way you know what your getting.
Too many "combos" have dodgy, no-name PSUs included.

Buy the "retail" Barton and use the supplied AMD heatsink.
If you wish, you can cheaply add an 80mm fan to the sink and increase it's performance.
