How To Split A Movie Or Compress It

Hi can anyone tell me how to compress my movies easily and what software to use i have only just found the wonders of TMPGenc but have a pretty basic package can only use the converter for vcd not svcd. i want something fairly easy or it put to me step by step i havent got nero and have never used it. If anyone can help i would be very grateful.

also another question i shall also put on a separate topic is how do i get my vcds to format to play on a surround sound dvd player i think its a 5.1 setting but i cant find it on the TMPGenc.....help a total novice someone please
