Is It Normal For Your Ip To Change?

A dynamic IP doesn't necessarily mean your IP changes each time you connect, this behaviour is particular to your ISP's policy. Dynamic IPs can remain the same for months. Static and dynamic IP addresses are defined by how they are assigned to your PC by your ISP.

If your ISP had to assign you your IP either by phone or mail and you had to activate it yourself within windows, then you have a static IP, otherwise you have a dynamic IP.

Hack your router then you can change your ip anytime you want.

Depends on the router you have. I&#39;ve done it. But it&#39;s beyond the scope of this forum unless you have the exact same router as me.

I don&#39;t know if this is the case, but...

I have a cable modem and my PC maintains a static IP until I switch out my desktop for my laptop. Once I do that, my laptop can&#39;t connect, I have to shut off my cable modem and restart it. Then my laptop has a different IP than my desktop.

From what I&#39;ve heard listening to other users (since I have a simple FTP server setup so I can get files from home at work I needed to know) it&#39;s pretty common. And it, in fact, does change every time....I would expect that your IP will change with your ISP everytime your machine ID changes....

Hint to all those who want to do (craaaazzzzy) things and that have a standard desktop as well as a laptop that they don&#39;t use all that often on their home PC.

When you use a router or even a cable modem your machine id, mac address, or internal ip has no effect on your external ip.

Your isp communicates with you only through the modem or other device. They don&#39;t know anything about the machines behind your modem or router at all. That&#39;s why most broadband users can turn off all pc&#39;s in the home and the public ip will never change unless the connection is reset by the isp or you physically turn the router off it might give you another ip but anything you are logged into or downloading will be interrupted. There is a way to release, renew, and keep it without ressetting the whole connection to your isp.

So no your machine id or what you call it has nothing to do with your ip changing.

Maybe he has one of those usb "ADSL Modems" rather than an ADSL router. Some "ADSL Modems" even use DUN.
