Okay, my take on the whole thing as a parent of three.
When it comes to sex/porn/nudity, I don't want my kids to see pornography for several reasons. First and foremost, because of the unrealistic quality of it, as Fre said. I don't want my kids to think that this type of things happens in real life - because for the most part, it doesn't. And I would rather my kids grow up to appreciate the natural beauty of a woman rather than the siliconed, make up covered and air-brushed women that this type of media generally depicts. And for the most part, these types of scenarios don't occur in real life, and a young and impressionable child seeing them is easily led into thinking that they do. Secondly, because I don't believe it is appropriate for young children to see such things, their minds are not ready to comprehend it. That's why I have net nanny. And lastly, believe it or not, even if curiosity abounds, some images are simply frightening for a child. I'll give an example.
Here, the kids have access to a computer, which has net nanny installed and is monitored by me at all times when they are on it. This is not so at my step-kids house, nor at many of their friends houses. Both my 11 year old son, and my 10 year old step daughter have seen porn on the internet. My 11 year old saw it a couple of years ago, when he was over at a friend's house and his friend's older brother decided to show them things. Quite a lot of it in fact. When checking his computer later, I found that he'd tried to search for things and confronted him. He confessed and told me what he'd seen. Now I'm pretty open minded about sex - you guys know that from my posts I'm sure. My reaction was to ask him if he had questions about what he'd seen, and to discuss things with him and inform him about the reality of sex, not what he'd seen on the internet. He does understand the difference, and even though the discussion was awkward, it also gives him a measure of faith in my honesty, and hopefully will let him realize that he can come to me and talk to me about this type of stuff if he has questions. The situation with my 10 year old step daughter was a little different, a couple of weeks ago she was on her own computer at her house - where her father and mother didn't feel it was necessary to install a filter such as net nanny, because she's too young and innocent to be looking for such things- and being curious typed the word sex into google. As you can imagine, she got a lot more than what she bargained for. She saw images of blow jobs, anal sex, bestiality, cum shots, you name it. She was terrified. She will not talk about it with either of her parents, she just starts crying. It probably doesn't help the situation that her mother is complete prude in these matters and likely doesn't even know what half the stuff she saw even is, or that her mother reacted very badly, like Taline had done something wrong. I don't think she did, I think she was curious about something, and did what she'd been taught to do in other cases, like looking up information for a school project - she googled it. The fact that her mother freaked out about it and made her feel ashamed of her curiosity appalls me, but as I'm not her mother, I can't really do much about it. I have, however, told her that if she has any questions, she can come and talk to me if she's too embarrassed to ask her mother or father.
With regard to nudity, I don't really have a problem with my kids seeing nudity, I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of, it a human body. Besides that, if they walk down the road to the beach, they can see all the boobs they'd like.![]()
When it comes to gore and violence, I know that a certain amount of it will be seen by my kids in everyday life. That doesn't mean I want it made readily available to them. Nathan has seen a dead body, we were witness to a very serious car accident a couple of years ago where a tractor trailer hit the bottom of an overpass, and the box (for lack of a better word) on the trailer detached and flew backward, taking out about 8 cars behind it. We were about six cars back and two lanes over and saw the whole thing, and were stuck there for about 2 hours while it was being cleaned up. Decapitated bodies were easily seen before the EMT showed up. Just because he has seen it, does not mean I want him to be able to buy magazines with it included.
As far as the sale of magazines goes - the black and white parental advisory does not make it illegal for kids to buy these magazines - it is a warning, but unless the magazine specifically states 18+ on the cover, it is not illegal for a child to buy it. At least that's the way it is here. I'm not sure what the legality of denying sale of such magazines to children is.
Someone said back a few pages that it makes no difference if you're a parent, I dissagreed and that absolutely excellent reply clearly shows the difference![]()
