Waste of time. If you have a linux box and you just set it and forget it then it won&#39;t turn out to be a pain in the ass later on. It sucks for day to day use though.

Multimedia sucks. It takes forever to get all the correct media libs and dependencies and all that good stuff before your really able to be satisfied with it. Distros that ship with mplayer should be shot for some of the prebuilt packages they include. I&#39;ve yet to use a precompiled package of mplayer where it didn&#39;t crash on just about everytime you open up a file that you might/might not have the correct codecs for. It works fine if you compile it from source but I still think xine works better.

A lot of people use Linux and don&#39;t implement any kind of firewall rules like ipchains, etc. So in a sense the box is just as insecure as any windows one.

IMO, don&#39;t waste your time using it for daily use unless it&#39;s completely necessary.

I got the Slack on one partiton.
Installed to check it out what its like.

It works (somewhat), but I still prefer XP over it.

Why? Its easier, mostly because im use to it.

The day when all the Audio Apps I like to use (Steinberg. Natives...) are
ported to Linux, im probably going to start using it much more.
Of course, the hardware has to have drivers also etc.

I guess any PC, with XP or Linux, can be really difficult to tune up for HD-recording/sequencing.
Im not really good at it but somehow I got my box working.
Im not going to change OS before im pretty sure the Linux has the apps I got
on my PC now.

Its been fun to play with Linux though, just to check it out how different it is.

Well honestly there there are not too many apps in Wndows that you can&#39;t find in Linux. I mean anything,

I&#39;d challenge just about anyone to name an application that&#39;s Windows based and I could easily come up with a "Linux" alternative because that&#39;s just the way Linux is.

I have more than one pc now so I can pretty much use both. If you installed slack before you should continue to give a go. I know a lot of folks that can&#39;t even install slack because they say it does not have an easy installer. Go figure they should give gentoo a whop.

A lot of folks now are making their own distros. When I get some spear time I might try Linux from scratch and make my own.

Btw, there is a guitar app for kde I think. Well at least there was. It&#39;s called kguitar. I&#39;m not sure how development is on it or if the project is still going on or not.

There is lotsa apps ported to Linux. But not the one I use, yet.

My problem is that it has taken some years to learn the Cubase SX, is what i use for HD recording/midi sequencing.
Even the thought of changing to CakeWalk or the likes is just about
out of question for me, and that is on XP also.
Cubase/Cakewalk are very similar, both are really good apps
works the same way etc but the GUI is very different.

That is a big issue for me, there is about million things one can do with
Cubase/Cakewalk or similar and if I have to learn "where everything is" again,
it would take so much time. Its not Impossible to do, but i just dont want to
spend that time on it.


If the Cubase was ported to Linux, i would jump on it as i believe
that the PC could be configured better to do the job. (compile your own Kernel etc.)
Xp can be tuned up too, but not as much as Linux.
In HD recording and that stuff, everything has to work
pretty well, one needs all the resources.

Also, im bit on the grey area here, but i have not heard of a
Audio app for Linux that is on the same scale than Cubase, for example.

Why Cubase? Because I know where&#39;s what and it has shitload of
plugins to add, 3-party plugins, Instruments, effects etc.
Those same plugins work for Cakewalk etc, but the Cubase interface is what im use to.
Took a lot of time to learn some tricks and im still learning as i go.
New versions, patches comes out with adds more stuff innit too,
like in other apps.

I got tons of smaller guitar apps, notation apps etc. but if i was to
compare those to Cubase it would be like comparing Paint to Photoshop.

And most of those Little guitar apps etc work under Cubase as a plugin.
Hell, even Fruity Loops works a VST plugin.


If I really had the Cash (someday,someday), I&#39;d probably get me a Mac with ProTools but now we&#39;re talkin about 10000&#036; range, and then some....



I think installing Slack to a PC is not so much more difficult than SX,
one just has to know what hardware is in the box.
XP makes a crappy Default install also, it takes hours to tune it up
until it "works", just like Linux. I guess most of the popular OS&#39;s has the same stuff,
Default Crap installed.
