nOOb is insulting, newbie is different. I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I'm a big fan of nice to new members, but I don't think we need to give them a new name to feel more at home. I think the 'not necessarily mean, not necessarily nice' term newbie helps in some small way weed out new member spamming. It only takes a couple of days for people to realize how quickly they go from being called newbie to nOOb when they do worthless posts. I think newcomer will add, in however small of an amount, to the number of posts made by newbies, especially in the wrong places. This seems to contradict the recent trend of trying to minimize usless posts and moderator workload. Just my opinion of course.

But then again, people who do find it an insult are childish. Also, it encourages them to post more. Then there's spam .......
I think we should scap newbie but come up with something more original and modern/fun the "newcomer".
How about: "in training"
"first steps"
nah, forget the end bit.

lol... good idea.
I have to agree that 'Newcomer' is a good title, but that won't stop people from calling them n00bs.

Being an online game addict, newbie an nOOb are used constantly,in-game, as a put-down.You gotta laugh. I like it, to me it means 'willing to learn', friendly and adaptable.Being a father of two small children I am a newbie too! We are all nOObs at something in life, why worry over the word?
Kind regards, Newbie south-paw
