S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) is a standard audio transfer file format.
It is usually found on digital audio equipment such as a DAT (Digital Audio Tape) machine or audio processing device.
It allows the transfer of audio from hardware to another without the conversion to and from an analog format, which could degrade the signal quality.

When talking about Digital Outputs/Inputs in Soundcards, its easy to confudge the CDrom and the SPDIF. They are 2 different things.

Had to add that for more clarity.

Oh yeah, I have the cabel from CDrom going to the Sounblaster,
Im not sure does it really help at all.
Have to check that out someday.

FIrst time i opened my old computer up (i had already opened an older computer and knew the inside a litle bit) i saw that wire and didn't know what it was. i asked someone and they said it was for sound, then i opened my computer, unplugged it, tested to see if the sound still worked, it did so i took it out.

haven't had one in since then.
