Hi,

My fan on my mobo chipset (I think that is what you call it, not the heatsink fan) is running very poorly, running slow then fast sometimes stopping, it sounds very bad. Has anyone any suggestions how to fix it? I have tried giving it a dust in case something was caught up in it but that didn't help

Sounds like bearing failure.

You should replace the fan asap, but in the meantime you might be able to extend it's life with a little oil. You will probably find a sticky label in the centre of one side of the fan. Carefully remove the label and you should expose the bearing. Add a tiny drop of oil (cooking oil is about right for this purpose) into the centre of the bearing, Then apply a little glue and put the label back on.

This will probably only be good for a few days, but it may keep you going until you can work out where to get a new one.

Cooking oil?
I assume that you have tried this before with no ill effects, Lynx.

If you use it Zero, make sure it is only as a temporary solution.

Yes, I've used it before. I did say it was a temporary solution.

The nice thing is that it is about the right viscosity, and you know exactly where it is. No hunting around in little used cupboards and sheds for that elusive can that you might have thrown away anyway.

Oh, and a nice smell as an early warning if things are getting too hot.

Do you really even NEED an active chipset cooler?

Most of the factory supplied units that I've seen ( the Abit NF7 being a good example) are so pathetic that they seem useless.
For $6-7 you can get the Zalman passive HS for the chipset and get reasonable heat dissipation and not have to worry about the fan dying.

Also...the factories seem to have a rather cavalier approach to the application of thermal paste.
None of the boards I've seen had what I would consider to be a proper application, so you should take a look at that, too.
