First, try clicking Start and Run, type sfc /scannow and hitting the return key.
Feed your XP CD when prompted, wait a while, then see if it's sorted.
well I tried that it I don't think it worked...once I put the cd in, the install screen appears...should I select reinstall (upgrade) windows option? Or would it be better if I just reformatted my hard drive and did a clean install of windows. The window cd I have, I think its an oem version. The only problem with formating is I've never done it before.
any tips or advice on what I should do next?

So you clicked Start and Run, typed sfc /scannow, hit the return key, the System File Checker checked your system files and asked for your Windows CD so you put it in and the autorun feature started but SFC didn't do anything?

yeah...exactly. The sfc ran and said some dll files had to be replaced and I inserted the cd, and waited as the bar went full but nothing happened.
