Say, if I had to reformat, and reinstall XP, would I have to download and install both SP1 and SP2? Or would SP2 cover SP1 and then some?

No. Just install SP2 and you're done. Everything that was in SP1 is included in SP2.

Good question, i was thinking of same thing.
so thats why all sp1 updates r vanished from AddRemove

the little updates just patch files likeblahblah.dll
they contain info about what updates are installed on that file
SP2 just replaces that file with another up to date file
it does that with like all windows files
i hope that explains it
