look for a camera with a CCD (charged coupled device) image sensor like all your camcorders have.

the other type is the CMOS (chrome, metal-oxide, semiconductor) sensor.

CMOS sensors usually comes in cheaper cameras ($40-50 or less).

A single CCD camera usually cost more but deals can be found. shop around.

the best would be a 3 CCD camera, but those cost thousands of dollars.

IMO the difference in quality between CCD and CMOS sensors is quite noticeable.

    regards,

there are a few variables other then the camera in determining the quality of your video when recording, chatting etc.

speed of your connection, your ISP, whomever you're connecting to not to mention the various software settings and hardware all will affect the quality when chatting.

if you're going to record video, you can affect quality by varying the amount of compression, if at all.

there is much more that can be said but the bottom line is you're going to have to try things and see what works best for you.

    peace,

p.s, toy with your lighting as well

I have an intel pocket pc camera.. image below:

This mofo has held up to 150 Nice looking images that have the same size as the ones you take with a normal camera when you output them onto your computer.

The software/usb connected video recording quality has nice quality too.

The only problem is I got mine off Sams.com when it was in overstock for a price of $30. The damn camera is much harder to find now and normally costs atleast $70! Holy moly it's gone up in price! Strange when computer related costs go "UP".

check around though, might find a sucker still sellin em for $30-40.
