Adsl / Dsl Modem...

Hey All,

It's been a long time since I was on this forums, but having moved house and changing ISP's, it's been a bit hectic at mine lately.

Basically, because of my switch from a cable ISP to a DSL, I now have to purchase a modem (broadband capable) either from them, or seperately.

I know there's people on here who know their shit, so let's here it.

I'm looking for an external modem, decent looking, and under £100 ($183.87).

The specs from the modem they're offering are as follows:

Performance

downstream data rates up to 8 Mbps.
upstream up to 1Mbps with auto rate adaptive
in step 32Kbps.
ADSL standards compliant

ITU-T G.992.1(G.DMT)
G.992.2(G.lite)
ANSI T1.413 issue 2 annex A, annex B, UR2
connector: RJ-11(pin 3,4)
chipset: Alcatel Microelectronics.

I've heard U.S. Robotics are fairly good, but haven't managed to find a modem, just a router and 56k modems.

Any help people?

Most (but not all) ISP's provide a modem FOC.

If you want to connect a single pc and will never want more than that, just go for a modem, but if you want to connect more than one (or will do in the future) go for a modem/router. If you are not sure, go for a modem with an ethernet interface rather than USB, that way you can add a router later.

Here are some options:

Modem with ethernet interface

4 port Modem Router

Hope that last one is right (but it is out of stock anyway), Ebuyer seems to have gone down temporarily. There's also an Ebuyer single port modem router (can't get a link atm) which allows you to connect multiple pc's if you've got a hub (or switch),

Dont forget to get some Splitters if they aren't included with the modem (or not enough). You need one for each phone point.

I can recommend the Ebuyer branded stuff (actually made by Origo). If you go for one of those you may need to get the latest firmware (here) but once you've done that I've found them to be excellent.

The ISP I'm intending to go with does supply a modem, but for a charge. Looking at the modem itself, and for the money they're asking, I know I can do a hell of a lot better, hence why I've decide to buy my own.

Can anyone who comes across this thread please post what DSL Modem they're currently using and what you would give it out of 10 for each of the following:

- Durability
- Performance
- Ease Of Use

Also please state whether it is a USB or Ethernet. Many thanks in advance.

I'm looking at the moment to get a Netgear DG632 ADSL Modem Router, but as I already have a Linksys Router, I'm looking for just a modem at the moment.

Well, just to recap. I purchased the Netgear DG632 and it seems I have made the worst decision ever. The modem/router can not handle more than 15 connections at a time. Obviously, this means I can't access ANY of my P2P clients.

DO NOT BUY!

tis unfortunate - i have a DG814 which works nicely.

send it back to them, tell them it isnt fit for purpose, and youd like a refund.

it doesnt matter how long you have had it, you first reported the issue a bit back and they have had chance to fix it, but havent. hence, id ring netgear and ask them how to get a refund...they may say to send to them

Works fine for me, It's a USb Modem but not sure about The maximum bandwidth's cos I only have 512/256!
It cost me about £35, you may get it cheaper if you shop around.

There are better ones though, even on that linked website.

im not sure exactly what models but speedstream are great i know that.
Also if youy buy of of ebay you can get modems for like $10!

Yea I'm after an DSL modem via Ethernet (I don't use USB with my BB).
