When deaing with outerspace distances, you need a diff. expression for gravitational potentioal energy. In arriving at such an expression, it is most convenient to adopt the convention that, when two objects are infinitely far apart, there is no gravitational potential energy. They do not influence each other, and it requires no work to move them around --- at least a s far as their effect on each other is concerned. As the 2 obecgts come closer to each other, their gravitational potential energy decreases. This is consistent with the usual use of the mgh formula. But if the enrgy was zero at infinte separation, and less than that at closer distances, then it must always be negative at any real distance! The forumula , in fact, is this:

How much is the gravitational energy of a 720-kilgram meteoid when it is at an altitude of 2200 km ( earth's mass= 5.976x10(to the 24th) kg, and accelertation due to gravity on earth avg: go = 9.81 m/s2 )

answer in a couple of min. (i'm not a genius damnit, gimme like 7 min to figure this out)
