    Lets just say I got hold of a copy of xp and I updated from 98se to xp.
    How would I go about registering so I could download updates.

    I not saying i've got a copy though.

    I would recommend a clean install instead of an upgrade.
    Also make sure your system meets XP's requirements.
    HERE is a good site to help with the installation.
