Some/most ISPs require you to install certain software. Looks like yours might be one.

things are quiet until hitler decides he'd like to invade russia
    so, he does
the russians are like "OMG WTF D00DZ, STOP TKING"
and the germans are still like "omg ph34r n00bz"
the russians fall back, all the way to moscow
and then they all begin h4xing, which brings on the russian winter
the germans are like "wtf, h4x"

the biggest dissapointment in the world of isp's today is that they dont really act as a true isp, ie, they want u to use thier software to connect, surf, download, and view media.
while its a good tactic for sales, its robbing the user of his integrity to be able to go out and do these things himself.
thus we have an onslaught of the AOL generation n00bs.
unable to install software, manage thier own media, u get the picture.

now if your not using a big industrialized isp, and dialing in. there is a good amount of useful software out there specifically made for u to be able to bypass all that.
    the most popular appz are
    Beware of Dog
    and older versions of dialguard.
there are a ton of sites out there dedicated to DUNning, available via google.
the best ones ever are all locked down, though, some even ended up with thier own ISP
