Creating Photo website

I have lots of pictures from my digital camera that am planning to put on my personal website. I have seen many people organizing and displaying them in different ways on their websites. Some uses thumbnails, some uses a left side menu to navigate. Some just uses folders and display them. Some even uses slide shows.
I wanted to know what do you think its the best way to display our pictures on the website. Are there any useful links that contains different types of picture display type. Also, any recommendation for softwares ?
