well.. technically.. the greatest would be from the very first video game towards DOOM 3.

ID software is tight, they pulled out Quake with some amazement..
Now Doom 3.

to sum up: CRAPPY GRAPHICS LEAD TO REAL LIFE MURDER 'cause they fail to satisfy our thirst for blood and even worsens the problem by delaying us with frustration. GOOD GRAPHICS SAVE LIVES by using hyper-realistic simulation to fulfill our spiritual drive to shoot, hack and stomp living things till there's nothing left but an unrecognizable splat in the dirt.

Well the old games had phsycological effects on some people.. some of those atari games had some very repetative sounds that would constantly loop through your head for hours. Constantly hearing that same "beep bop beep bop" makes some want to loose self control.

eh... i think they'd drive me nutts too
